How to Open Your Account
The process is generally fast, but documentation is key.
Gather Documents
You strictly need:
β’ Passport (Valid 6+ months)
β’ Visa (E-Class Business/Ordinary, NOT Tourist)
β’ Lease Agreement (Proof of residence)
β’ Employment Letter (Often required for ABA)
Walk In (No Appointment)
Go to a head office branch (e.g., ABA Independence Monument or BRED Norodom). Service is faster and English levels are higher than local branches.
Deposit & App Setup
Most banks require a $10-$50 initial deposit. You will set up the mobile app immediately at the counter. Test it before leaving.
Fee Comparison Matrix
Banking is relatively cheap in Cambodia, but international transfers vary.
| Feature | ABA Bank | BRED Bank | J Trust Royal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly Fee | $0 (Standard) | $0 – $5 (Tiered) | $0 |
| Debit Card | $5 Issuance | Free (some tiers) | $5 Issuance |
| Int’l Transfer | ~0.15% (Min $15) | Competitive (Euro) | Standard SWIFT |
| Requirement | Strict (Work Permit) | Moderate | Moderate |
The Work Permit Requirement
In 2026, compliance is stricter. While you can open a limited account with just a Visa and Lease, fully unlocking features (international transfers, credit cards) often requires a valid Cambodian Work Permit.
Dual Currency is Standard
You will typically get two accounts: one in USD and one in KHR (Riel). The apps handle conversion seamlessly, usually at market rates.
Banking FAQs
Can I open an account with a Tourist Visa?
Generally, no. Most reputable banks now strictly require a 6-month or 12-month extension (Business/Retirement). Some smaller banks might allow it, but functionality will be severely limited.
Is my money safe?
Cambodian banks are regulated by the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC). While there is no government-backed deposit insurance like the FDIC (USA), major banks like ABA (owned by National Bank of Canada) and Acleda offer high stability.
What is KHQR?
KHQR is the standardized QR payment system. You can scan ANY bank’s QR code with your bank app (e.g., Scan an ACLEDA QR with your ABA app) to pay instantly for free. It is accepted everywhere from malls to tuk-tuks.
