Expat Defense Matrix
Cambodia is incredibly safe, but distinct. Master the local flows, secure your assets, and navigate the Kingdom with zero friction.
Digital First
Cash is risk. 95% of vendors accept KHQR. Set up ABA Bank immediately to avoid flashing wallets.
Traffic Vector
The #1 risk is not crime, it’s traffic. Always assume right-of-way is negotiated, not given.
Street Awareness
Bag snatching happens. Keep phones away from the street side. Wear cross-body bags.

Common friction points to avoid.
The “Friendly” Poker Game High Risk
The Setup: A friendly local or foreigner invites you to a home for dinner/lunch. Cards come out. You are asked to help “teach” someone.
The Protocol: Never accept invitations to private homes from strangers on the street or riverside. Leave immediately.
Rental Deposit Disputes Med Risk
The Setup: Landlord refuses to return deposit upon moving out, citing minor wear and tear.
The Protocol: Take a 4K video walkthrough on Day 1. Send it to the landlord immediately via Telegram as a timestamped record. Review the contract for “wear and tear” clauses.
TukTuk “No Change” Low Risk
The Setup: Driver claims to have no change for a $10 or $20 bill.
The Protocol: Use PassApp, Grab, or TADA. If paying cash, always carry small Riel (1,000 – 5,000 notes). Never argue aggressively over small amounts.
Medical Extraction Protocol
Public hospitals vary in quality. For serious trauma, reliable private options are mandatory.
- Royal Phnom Penh Hospital: (Thai Standard) – Best for Trauma
- Sunrise Japan Hospital: High standard neuro/cardio
- Requirement: Health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is non-negotiable.
