Healthcare in Cambodia 2026: Hospitals & Clinics Guide

Quick Answer Last Updated: October 2026

Pick your “bad day” hospital now, save two numbers, insure the medevac

For most expats, the best hospitals in Phnom Penh for serious care are Royal Phnom Penh Hospital (Bangkok Dusit Medical Services group) and Sunrise Japan Hospital, with Intercare, Khema and Raffles Medical covering everyday and urgent care across town.

Ask the clinic for a quote before a GP or specialist visit. Bangkok is roughly one hour away by air, which is why complex cardiac, stroke and trauma cases often end up there. An uninsured air ambulance is very expensive, so ask your insurer or provider for a quote and don’t rely on paying yourself. Save two emergency numbers today and buy cover that names evacuation to Bangkok or Singapore.

How Healthcare Works Here (Private vs Public, and Why Medevac Matters)

Cambodia runs on two tracks. Private hospitals and international clinics in Phnom Penh handle GP visits, labs, imaging, dental work, maternity and a fair share of surgery. Public hospitals are cheaper, but you will face language barriers and long waits. There is no free public healthcare for foreigners, and the UK FCDO notes that foreigners at Calmette can pay up to twice the local price.

Medevac matters because the top tier is thin. When a case needs more than Phnom Penh can safely do, your doctor stabilises you and arranges a transfer, usually to Bangkok. Outside Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, care drops off quickly. Plan your insurance around the worst day, not the average one.

Hospital & Clinic Decision Matrix

Every row below appears on the UK FCDO list (January 2026) and has a live official website or phone line as of October 2026. Opening status, ER hours and phone numbers still change, so check before you go.

Emergency Playbook: Numbers, What to Say, Which ER, Deposits

Numbers. Ambulance 119, police 117, fire 118 (UK FCDO). The 119 line may not have an English speaker. If you can talk, calling a private hospital’s own 24/7 line is often faster.

Save these now (official sites, October 2026)
  • Sunrise Japan Hospital emergency (24h): 023 260 151 / 078 260 151. Telegram: t.me/SunriseJapanHospital_Chat
  • Intercare 24-hour emergency: +855 96 8 119 119
  • Raffles Medical 24/7 emergency: +855 12 816 911
  • Khema: the 24/7 line for your nearest site, listed on khemahospital.com

What to say. Keep it short and slow:

1
Where you are. Building name, street number, sangkat and a landmark.
2
What happened. “Fall, head injury”, “chest pain”, “not breathing well”.
3
Who. Age, conscious or not, known conditions, allergies.
4
Callback. Give your number, then send a live location by Telegram or WhatsApp.

Which ER by district (nearest options, not rankings):

  • Toul Kork, Sen Sok, Russian Blvd: Royal Phnom Penh Hospital, Khema Toul Kork or Sen Sok.
  • BKK1, Chamkarmon, Tonle Bassac: Khema BKK1, Intercare, Raffles.
  • Daun Penh, Riverside, Phsar Thmey: Raffles, Central Hospital, Calmette.
  • Chroy Changvar and the north bank: Sunrise Japan Hospital.
Bring a card, not just insurance Private hospitals price in US dollars. Sunrise Japan lists a deposit among admission documents, and you should expect the same elsewhere unless your insurer has confirmed direct billing. Carry your passport (or a photo), insurance card, a credit card and some cash. If a friend is with you, they handle paperwork while you get treated.

Everyday Care: GPs, Dental, Pharmacies, Labs, Vaccinations

GPs. Raffles, Khema, Intercare and Advance European Medicare Centre are the usual expat starting points. Book ahead for weekday mornings; walk-ins are possible.

Dental. Roomchang Dental Hospital and European Dental Clinic both appear on the FCDO list. Ask the clinic for a quote before treatment.

Pharmacies. Most medicines are sold without a prescription. That is convenient, but counterfeit and expired stock does circulate, especially from market stalls. Buy from established chains such as U-Care or Pharmacie de la Gare, or from hospital pharmacies. Ask for the original box with a readable expiry date. Bring a three-month supply of any chronic medication plus your prescription.

Labs. Institut Pasteur du Cambodge runs a public medical lab with a published price catalogue (version 3, June 2026). Hospitals run their own 24-hour labs too.

Vaccinations. Institut Pasteur’s International Vaccination Center on Monivong Blvd covers adult and child vaccines. Its rabies prevention centres handle post-exposure shots.

Local-friend take: If a dog or monkey bites or scratches you, wash the wound with soap and water and get to a rabies clinic the same day. Don’t wait to see if it “looks fine”.

What Things Cost (October 2026)

Lab prices below are published by Institut Pasteur. For everything else, ask for a quote. Hospital prices move with doctor, room type and tests, so ask for an estimate before anything that isn’t urgent.

Service Indicative band Source type
GP consultation, international clinic Ask the clinic for a quote Clinic-published + secondary
Specialist consultation, private hospital Ask the hospital for a quote Secondary 2026 guides
Dental scale and polish Ask the clinic for a quote Clinic price via comparison site
Blood test panel CBC US$8.55; lipid profile US$10.05; “Essential Health Screening” US$75 at Institut Pasteur Official IPC catalogue

Insurance & Medevac Checklist (What to Read in Any Policy)

MoveKH does not recommend specific insurers. Still choosing a type of cover? Our Cambodia expat health insurance guide compares local, international and travel plans. Use this list to read any policy wording before you pay:

1
Evacuation destination. Does it say Bangkok or Singapore, or only “nearest suitable facility”? Some policies decide Phnom Penh is “suitable”.
2
Evacuation limit and who decides. Find the cap, the 24/7 assistance number, and whether the insurer or your doctor makes the call.
3
Inpatient limit. A week in a Bangkok hospital can cost more than the flight.
4
Direct billing. Ask the insurance desk at the hospital you would actually use whether they bill your insurer directly.
5
Motorbike clause. Many policies exclude riding without a valid licence or helmet.
6
Pre-existing conditions. Disclose everything. Hidden conditions can void a claim.
7
Residency status. Travel insurance often stops covering long stays. Check it still works on an extended visa.
8
Companion and return costs. Check whether a partner’s flight and your trip home are covered.

  • Siem Reap: Royal Angkor International Hospital and Intercare Medical Center Siem Reap. Serious cases often go to Phnom Penh or Bangkok.
  • Sihanoukville: clinic-level care with limited ambulances; plan for transfer to Phnom Penh.
  • Battambang: Handa Medical Centre and Battambang Referral Hospital.
  • Kampot: Sonja Kill Memorial Hospital, 6 km west of town; outpatients weekdays only.

If you live outside the capital, keep a Phnom Penh hospital number and your insurer’s assistance line together in your phone.

01 What is the best hospital in Phnom Penh for expats?

For serious care, most expats default to Royal Phnom Penh Hospital, with Sunrise Japan Hospital as the main alternative. For everyday care, Raffles, Khema and Intercare are closer and cheaper. Check before you go.

02 What is the emergency number in Cambodia?

Ambulance 119, police 117, fire 118. English is not guaranteed, so also save your nearest private hospital’s 24/7 line.

03 How much does a doctor visit cost in Phnom Penh?

Prices vary by clinic and doctor, so ask for a quote when you book. Tests and medicines cost extra.

Often. Sunrise Japan lists a deposit for admission, and others work the same way unless your insurer confirms direct billing. Carry a card and your passport.
