Entering Cambodia Long-Term? Get the E-Class Visa

If you plan to live, work, retire, or seek employment in Cambodia, enter on an Ordinary Visa (E-Class) for $35 USD, never a Tourist Visa (T-Class). The E-Class grants an initial 30 days and is the only category that can be extended indefinitely inside the country for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months. Submit your mandatory free Cambodia e-Arrival Card within 7 days before landing.

What Is the Cambodia Ordinary Visa (E-Class)?

The Cambodia Ordinary Visa—formally designated as Visa E (Ordinary)—is the fundamental entry visa for anyone moving to Cambodia beyond a 30-day holiday. Despite its simple name, it is the primary gateway visa for foreign workers, entrepreneurs, remote freelancers, and retirees.

A frequent misunderstanding among first-time arrivals is confusing the E-Class Visa with an electronic visa (e-Visa). An e-Visa simply refers to an online application method. In contrast, the Ordinary Visa is an official immigration classification. You can secure an E-Class visa online or directly at immigration counters upon landing in Phnom Penh (PNH) or Siem Reap-Angkor (SAI).

The Irreversible $5 Tourist Visa Mistake A Tourist Visa (T-Class, $30) allows only a single 30-day extension. After 60 days total, you cannot convert to an Ordinary Visa inside Cambodia. You must leave the country on an international flight or border run and re-enter. Learn more in our Tourist vs E-Class Visa Guide.

What Documents and FPCS Checks Do You Need?

Bring a clean file. Incomplete paperwork is how extensions die quietly.

  • Passport valid at least six months beyond the extension you request
  • Passport photo + blank pages per current checklist
  • Category evidence (contract / company papers, retirement proof, school letter, or job-search support docs)
  • FPCS registration at your real address
  • For many 6/12-month EB renewals: work-permit evidence as requested — verify your file
FPCS

Hotels usually register short stays. For apartments, your landlord should add you. If they stall, self-register before you hand over your passport. Deep dive: FPCS guide.

Why it matters

Secondary sources and practitioner reports repeatedly say GDI will not issue an extension if you are missing from FPCS. Ask “Am I registered at this address?” before submission day.

How Do You Extend Step-by-Step (Agent vs DIY)?

Routine extensions go through the General Department of Immigration (GDI). Do not confuse HQ with the Visa Office used for many exit / overstay clearances. Confirm the current One-Window address and hours before you travel.

Path Best when Watch-outs
DIY at GDI Clean docs · simple renewal · you can visit Khmer-heavy counters · holiday queues
